Magick – What’s with the K?

Today, I want to talk about the question that often sparks curiosity and confusion – and show why I tend to use it: Magick – What’s with the K?

Let’s start with the definition. When we spell it as “magic” without the K, the #1 dictionary definition refers to the art of producing illusions and entertainment through sleight of hand and conjuring tricks. It’s the magic we often see on stage or in performances, captivating audiences with its marvels.

But when we switch to “magick” with the K, it takes on a different meaning. In an archaic sense, it simply refers to magic itself. However, in the context of witchcraft and other magical traditions, the term “magick” carries a deeper significance. It represents a power or effort associated with connecting to the spiritual realm and aligning with one’s true purpose.

One figure who played a significant role in popularizing the use of the K in magick is Aleister Crowley. Crowley, a renowned occultist and founder of the religion called Thelema, emphasized the concept of “true will.” In essence, this true will can be seen as synonymous with what I refer to as the “higher self.” Crowley used the term “magick” to describe the practices and rituals aimed at aligning oneself with their true purpose in life.

By utilizing the K in “magick,” Crowley sought to distinguish it from mere entertainment or stage magic. It became a way to signify the transformative and spiritual aspects of the practice, setting it apart from the illusionary tricks performed for amusement. The K in magick became a symbol of the deeper mysteries and the pursuit of personal growth and spiritual connection.

And there you have it, a brief exploration of the meaning behind the K in magick. It serves as a reminder of the profound nature of the craft and its connection to the spiritual realm. That’s why I tend to use it. Whether you choose to use magic or magick in your own practice, the intent and dedication to personal growth remain at the heart of it all.
